Application Guide for International Student Scholarships of the League of Tropical Universities
To promote research cooperation and talent cultivation among member institutions of the League of Tropical Universities, Hainan University will provide a total of two study opportunities to each member institution.
Hainan University may offer full scholarships (supporting both major study and preparatory Chinese language study) for pursuing master's or doctoral degrees, covering tuition fees, on-campus accommodation fees, living expenses, and comprehensive medical insurance fees (attachment 1).
Additionally, two exchange student spots (for one semester or one academic year,Chinese Language Program only ) will be provided to each member institution, with tuition fees and on-campus accommodation fees waived (attachment 2).

Master's and Doctoral Scholarship

The Scholarship is for prospective international students who wish to study at Hainan University for a master’s degree or doctoral degree.

II.Scholarship Coverage
The Scholarship covers: tuition fee, accommodation fee on campus, medical and accidental Insurance at Hainan University. And it also provides a monthly stipend (master’ s students and doctoral students: CNY 1,500 per month).The applicant is responsible for all other fees.
III. Where and When to Apply
Where to Apply: Applicants must submit the scanned copies and complete the University online application system at https://hainanu.at0086.cn/StuApplication/Login.aspx before June 15, 2025.
When to Apply: Between January 22 and June 15, 2025
IV. Eligibility
1.Applicants should be non-Chinese citizen, well-behaved and capable of living independently. Be obligated to observe Chinese laws and university’s regulations, respect Chinese culture and customs, and fulfill all the conditions of Chinese Entry-exit.
2. Be a bachelor’s degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for master’s programs; be a master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for doctoral programs.
3. Language Requirements:
1) Applicants for Chinese-taught programs are required to obtain an HSK Band 4 with scores above 180 when applying. 2) Applicants for English-taught programs are required to obtain: a score of 560 or above (paper-based test), 78 or above (internet-based test) in TOEFL, or a minimum overall band of IELTS 6.0 when applying.
Condition of exemption of submitting English level certificates: English-speaking students (Countries with English as native language or official language).
V. Application Documents
Applicants must submit the scanned copies and complete the University online application system at https://hainanu.at0086.cn/StuApplication/Login.aspx before June 8, 2025.
1. Copy of Passport Home Page. If the validity of the applicant’s current passport does not meet the requirement (i.e. the passport expires before July 2026), please apply for a new passport before submitting the application.
2.Notarized highest diploma attained & Notarized Academic Transcripts (from the undergraduate program onwards). Copies of academic records from first to last semester during the undergraduate, graduate (if any), and doctoral programs (if any) shall be provided. These transcripts shall be issued and sealed by the enrolled university’s academic affairs office, graduate school, or student management department. They can be in Chinese or English, but must be attached with notarized English translations if they are in foreign languages other than English; if the applicant is a current student, he has to submit an official pr-graduation certificate showing his student status and stating expected graduation date, and the original certificate should be provided after admission. If the applicant is an employer, he has to submit a Certificate of Incumbency issued by the unit or company which he’s working for.
3.Proof of Chinese or English proficiency. A valid HSK certificate (Applicants for Chinese-taught programs), or a valid IELTS or TOEFL certificate (Applicants for English-taught programs) .The certificate should be issued after May 1st, 2023.
4.Foreigner Physical Examination Form and Blood Test Report (Attachment 3). The physical examination must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. The Form must be completed and have the signature of the attending physician and the official stamp of the hospital with a sealed photograph of the applicant. Incomplete forms or forms are considered invalid. Physical examination results are valid for only 6 months.
5.Two letters of recommendation from professors or associate professors in Chinese or English.
6.A Study Plan or Research Proposal written in Chinese or English ( a minimum of 1000-1500 words).
7.Certificate of Non-Criminal Record. A valid certificate of Non-Criminal Record issued by the local public security authority must be submitted, usually issued within 6 months prior to the submission date of the application.
8.International students in China who apply for our University must hold a valid Visa or study type residence permit. In addition, applicants must provide the "Certificate of End of Study" or "Transfer Certificate" issued by the aforementioned school/ University.
9. CV (including publication list if available)
10.If one or both parents of applicant are Chinese citizens, or applicants who were originally Chinese citizens and obtained foreign nationalities afterward, a certificate of living abroad and the entry and exit seal page of visiting China on the applicant’s passport during the recent 4 years should be provided.
11.Recommendation letter from one member of the League of Tropical Universities.
12.APPLICATION FORM FOR HAINAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP (HGS) (Attachment 5 ).

1.Application materials which do not meet the above requirements will be regarded as invalid and will not be accepted;
2.Applicants must fill in the system truthfully in Chinese or in English. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translation in Chinese or English;

VI. Approval and Notification
1. Hainan University will review the application documents.
2. Hainan University will announce the admission results officially on website, and issue digital Admission Letter and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202) to scholarship winners in July;
3. Registration: the beginning of September generally (specified in the Letter of Admission).
4. Scholarship holders must participate in an annual scholarship evaluation.Those who fail to meet the requirements will have their scholarships canceled.
5. Scholarship recipients shall not change their host school, field of study, or duration of study unless they give up the grant.
Scholarship for Exchange Students
